I wanted to write a new post for today, but spent the past 7 hours in the emergency room with a kidney stone.
For my readers though, I’ve gotten you something new. Global warming has again swung into the public eye with the revelation of falsified data from the University of Colorado who decided to add .3mm per year to their predictions of the impending rise in sea level in order to make things look worse.
In recognicion of the fact that man made global warming is still a hot topic, (see what I did there?) I’m going to post the first article I have ever had published.
Welcome to the Spring issue of the Nittany World News. (I’ll have the links up by the end of the day, but I wanted you guys to have SOMETHING to read.)
On 25 July, 1997, before the Kyoto protocol was finalized (although it had been fully negotiated), the United States Senate voted unanimously to pass the Byrd-Hagel Resolution which stated that the sense of the Senate was that the United States should not be a signatory to any protocol that did not include targets and timetables for developing as well as industrialized nations. To fail to do this “would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States, including significant job loss.”
This rejection of Kyoto by the Senate (and not by President Bush) went largely unnoticed until Al Gore burst back on the scene – not as a political candidate, but as the Savior of the World.
Under his new banner, thousands have flocked to heed the call of planetary salvation. Scientists have been interviewed, and mountains of research compiled, all stating categorically that the Earth is warming and it’s your fault.
Why then, if the evidence is so overwhelming, have drastic measures not been taken to ensure the survival of the planet? Why is the human race still hurtling toward complete and utter destruction with apparent disregard for our safety?
Because it isn’t true.
The primary argument supporting the position of Global Warming alarmists is that carbon dioxide levels have spiked since the Industrial Revolution. This increase seemingly correlates with a temperature jump over the past hundred years.
The relationship between historic temperatures and CO2 levels, based on ice-core samples, however, shows that carbon dioxide levels rise and fall as a function of temperature, not the other way around. This disconnect is not addressed anywhere in literature cited by those who support Gore’s theory.
Carbon dioxide is also not the influential gas that is has been made out to be. To the contrary, according to NASA, only .0037% of the atmosphere is actually CO2 while 97% of greenhouse gasses are comprised of water vapor.
Even assuming Gore’s statistics stating that mankind is responsible for 5% of CO2 increases, the numbers remain laughably miniscule. When one takes into account water vapor, the amount of greenhouse gasses caused by humans drops to 0.28%. Care to calculate just how much 0.28% of .0037% is?
Another argument thrust forward by alarmists is that there is a consensus regarding what the data have revealed. It is apparently permissible for science to be conducted by democratic majority instead of empirical accuracy.
Consensus in science was responsible for the ruthless persecution of Copernicus and Galileo – two of the most brilliant scientific minds of all time. The status quo was so firmly entrenched that Copernicus escaped being burnt at the stake only by dying and Galileo was imprisoned and humiliated.
Richard Lynn, on page 18 of his book, Eugenics: A reassessment, Lynn states, “By the middle decades of the twentieth century, eugenics had become widely accepted throughout the whole of the economically developed world, with the exception of the Soviet Union.” As little as one hundred years ago, an overwhelming majority of scientists supported the study of eugenics, or the forcible sterilization of people with less-than-desirable traits. The thinking behind this was that a stronger, healthier human race could be created by destroying or breeding out unwanted characteristics.
Further, the theory of Continental Drift flew in the face of consensus. His opponents claimed that to accept his theory was to reject the past seventy years of geological knowledge. Now, however, it is accepted as geological fact.
These examples are brushed aside by those who say the Global Warming consensus is undeniable. It is impossible, in their view, for anything to possibly counter the firmly entrenched and forcibly defended positions they have taken.
Those who posit scientific studies which are skeptical of man’s influence over planetary-wide climate shift are immediately denounced as lackeys of Big Oil or other energy companies. Even President Obama has leveled this charge. Hopefully, it is safe to assume NASA and NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) are rather independent sources of information and can be trusted as such.
NASA has been tracking temperatures throughout the solar system and has found remarkable data. Climactic changes equal to or even more severe than those on Earth are also happening on other bodies within the system, including Mars, Jupiter, Triton (Neptune’s largest moon) and Pluto.
Perhaps our SUVs are polluting their atmospheres as well. One can only wonder how likely it is that man is responsible for affecting the climate of the solar system by our actions here. Is there an intergalactic super-highway I’ve been kept in the dark about?
NASA and NOAA have posited a different theory that doesn’t involve interplanetary highways or stellar coal plants. In 2005 data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the ice caps near the south pole of Mars had been diminishing for three summers in a row, and research has found that the sun is burning more brightly and hotter than at any time during the past thousand years.
“It’s believed that what drives climate change on Mars are orbital variations,” said Jeffrey Plaut, a project scientist for NASA’s Mars Odyssey mission. “The Earth also goes through orbital variations similar to that of Mars.”
Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of Space Research at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming is being caused by the sun. “The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars,” he says.
Solar fluctuations have substantially influenced the Earth for centuries. During a 75-year period beginning in 1645, astronomers detected almost no sunspot activity on the sun.
This period is referred to as the “Mauder Minimum,” and coincided with the coldest part of the Little Ice Age, a 350-year cold spell that covered much of Europe and North America with ice. When sunspot activity increased, so did the temperatures of the planet, forcing back the ice and leading to moderate temperatures enjoyed in the regions previously covered in snow and ice.
Rational people don’t have a hard time believing the giant flaming ball of gas that’s (in terms of the galaxy) right next door causes large effects on our weather here on earth.
It is also doubtful that Global Warming plays a role in weather phenomena such as hurricanes or typhoons. NOAA, which runs the National Hurricane Center, took the unusual step last November of saying it is the consensus view among NOAA scientists that global warming isn’t causing either more storms or greater storm intensity, stating, “increases in hurricane activity are primarily the result of natural fluctuations in the tropical climate system.”
The final nail in the coffin of man-made global warming is the fact that dissent is crushed. State Climatologists have had their titles revoked and other prominent scientists have been threatened with death for daring to utter a word in opposition to the man now known as the Goracle.
If the science were so irrefutable, wouldn’t criticism be welcomed so as to be smashed against the overwhelming scientific majesty that is available in the data? The mere fact that outside opinions – no matter how professional or scientific – are not tolerated is evidence enough that man-made global warming is a hysterical myth.
